After taking diabetes medications for so long, why does my blood sugar still keep fluctuating?
Many people with diabetes share this puzzle: they take their medication on schedule and don’t even dare to indulge in their diet, yet the numbers on the glucometer still bounce up and down — sometimes even more unruly than when they were first diagnosed. In fact, fluctuating blood sugar doesn’t mean the medication is wasted; it’s more like several forces pulling against each other at the same time.
The most easily overlooked factor is the “hidden sugar spikes” in the diet. Many people think they haven’t touched anything sweet, but forget how quickly staple foods like plain congee, white rice, and steamed buns turn into sugar in the body. A bowl of hot congee can send blood sugar soaring even more sharply than a slice of cake. Add in fried foods, heavily seasoned dishes, and late-night snacks, and the numbers the medication just brought down get quietly pushed back up by eating habits.
Exercise is another area where people often fall short. Muscles are the main consumers of blood sugar. Sitting still for long periods makes the body increasingly “unresponsive” to insulin. Some people collapse on the couch right after taking their meds — it’s like giving the drug but providing no outlet, so the sugar just piles up in the blood.
Then there are the two “hidden hands”: sleep and stress. Staying up late and anxiety force the body to secrete sugar-raising hormones, so even the best medication has to work against the wind. For many people, the root of blood sugar swings isn’t in the bowl, but by the pillow.
This brings us to a direction more and more people are asking about: mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Their approach to type 2 diabetes differs from traditional hypoglycemic drugs. Most traditional drugs “push” — pushing the pancreas to produce more insulin, or forcing cells to absorb more sugar. MSCs are more like “repair.” They secrete a host of repair factors that help improve the microenvironment around the islets, sparing the still-functioning islet cells from inflammatory damage, letting them catch their breath and gradually regain some function.
Another highlight is immune regulation. Behind type 2 diabetes lies a layer of chronic inflammation; stem cells can help suppress this abnormal immune attack, easing the burden on the islets at the root. More importantly, they target the old nemesis of “insulin resistance.” Many diabetics don’t lack insulin — their bodies just can’t use it properly. Stem cells help boost tissue sensitivity to insulin, like pushing open a jammed door again.
Of course, stem cells are no miracle cure, and they can’t replace the fundamentals: proper medication, diet, and exercise. They are more like a substitute player, offering another option for those whose blood sugar stays uncontrolled long-term and whose complications are starting to emerge. If you really want to consider it, you must go through proper medical institutions with compliant clinical protocols.
The stem cell therapy technology of Guangzhou Doublle Biology has been carried out as a compliant translational application in the Beidaihe Life Health Industry Innovation Demonstration Zone, relying on the national “pilot and trial” policy. All projects are conducted in compliance at licensed medical institutions, assessed by licensed physicians, and carried out under informed consent, strictly following relevant filing and regulatory requirements.
As a national-level pilot zone for the health industry, the Beidaihe Life Health Industry Innovation Demonstration Zone has always focused on introducing and translating cutting-edge innovative medical technologies, with supporting green channels and accelerated approval mechanisms, enabling pilot implementation within the zone, accelerating technology maturity, and addressing clinical pain points. The newly approved project features advanced technology, mature processes and quality management systems, and urgent unmet clinical needs, making it highly complementary to the pilot policy. But this absolutely does not mean “loosening oversight” — on the contrary, medical institutions involved in translation must complete filing, protocols must pass ethical review, implementation must obtain patient informed consent, and the entire process must be traceable.
